La bioética es el estudio sistemático de las dimensiones morales de las ciencias de la vida y de la atención a la salud. Aunque ha acontecido una competencia básica entre las profesiones sanitarias, su impacto entre los biólogos es menor. Se describen las causas de esta evolución, empezando por el contexto que propició la génesis, los problemas morales planteados por el uso de las nuevas tecnologías médicas y los abusos con los sujetos de investigación, que culminó con la identificación de unos principios éticos, publicados en el Informe Belmont (1978). Los comités de ética son los órganos institucionales de composición multidisciplinaria que velan por la aplicación de estos principios en la investigación con humanos y que orientan y aconsejan en los problemas morales de la práctica clínica.
El procedimiento utilizado es la deliberación, la ponderación de los argumentos para poder decidir. La identificación de unos principios éticos para orientar la investigación en las ciencias de la vida se tendría que basar en el diálogo interdisciplinario. Con este procedimiento se pueden evitar algunos errores y excesos del pensamiento científico cuando, con parcialidad, se aleja del pensamiento humanístico.
